Artificial Insemination in Indigenous Chicken

A Workshop on artificial insemination for enhancing the performance of indigenous chickens was held at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The event, which runs as a parallel programme to the 2nd iLINOVA Summer School at OAU, was held from 24th through 27th November, 2015, was facilitated by Dr. Ngeno Kiplangat of Egerton University, Kenya and supported by Drs. Banda of LUANAR, Malawi and Oyabanji (OAU, Ile-Ife, Nigeria).
Participants at the Workshop included an entire class of graduate and postgraduate students of the Department of Animal Sciences, OAU, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Essentially, the Workshop was divided into three sessions: (a) Introduction to A I in chickens (including basic anatomy and physiology of hens and cocks and knowledge of their reproductive tracts), (b) Practical demonstration of A I in chickens and (c) Practice exercises by the students to gain experience and understand the process.
The workshop enabled the participants to gain working knowledge of the basic steps and processes involved with A I for chickens as part of skills acquisition.
